Fall at Mower's Flea Market
What a wonderful way to spend some time on a fall weekend. We plan to be open thru Thanksgiving Weekend- weather providing. The sun tops and shorts have been replaced with jeans and sweaters. Shoppers and vendors enjoy this time of year, no humidity, and the knowledge that winter isn't to far away makes us all grateful for these last few weeks of enjoying the out doors. See you at the market!

Sean's Hot Dog Cart- Every Sunday at Mowers
Each Sunday, Sean takes a break from his week day spot on Main St. in Kingston and sets up his hotdog cart at the fleamarket. Jean Turmo is one of his regular visitors. Sean serves the traditional style hot dog and also has chicken sausage and a weekly veggie dog. You can quench your thirst with a cold soda, bottled water and Sean's tasty lemonade. If you are lucky, you'll get a free hot dog when you answer the weekly trivia question.
Joey's Hot Dog Cart
Though Joey isn't actually present at Mower's - Deb set's up his hotdog cart every Saturday and serves up delicious traditional dirty water hotdogs with all the fixings. Have them plain, with Kraut or home made chili sauce, you choose!. Cold soda or bottled water and chips round out the selection for lunch or a quick afternoon snack. It's kind of fun to know that for almost a decade, return visitors to Mower's Flea market count on Deb to have the umbrella up and ready by 11 AM so they can have a dog and walk the market. Donna and Bruce, seen here waiting for his hot dog, are regular visitors to the market and Joey's hot dog cart.

Variety of experiences at Mower's Fleamarket in Woodstock
Artie offers massage therapy- you pay by the minute. A short massage in an outdoor setting is a great way to beat the stress of daily living.
One of the great aspects of Mower's fleamarket is that each day there will be a different line up of vendors. This lovely doll collection makes an appearance now and then. Shopping a fleamarket can bring out the spirit of adventure in you. One never knows what treasure one will find.

A huge selection of objects de junque
Every now and again, a vendor arrives in a big box truck. Deep within the truck are stored hundreds of treasures. My fascinations about the good old days include toileting implements. Much to my surprise, here stands a portable potty- not a pretty chamber pot- but a wooden one seater.
Lamps
Turning the corner, I noticed off in the distance these beautiful lamps. Though the lamps don't match my decor, I imagine it was the color of the body of the lamp, soft green, that really caught my eye. This is one of the the things I love about the fleamarket, you just never know what you are going to stumble on.

5 am on a Saturday - for 36 years
Early Saturday mornings in Woodstock are very quiet. In town, there is little to no traffic. Perhaps an occasional police car on patrol or the Deisings delivery truck. It is a rare occasion to encounter another person. We get to the maple lane property around 6 30 am and by then, there are some signs of life. The Bread Alone crew has the coffee brewing. By 7am - vendors begin lining up to sell at Mower's fleamarket.
The market is open both days this weekend. Come and visit! The annual side walk sale is also on this weekend.

Poem by Pamela Twining
Market 5/6/13 __________________________________
on Mower’s field
the grass has greened
and trees leaved out embrace the Light
and soften the wind’s breath
rustling in anticipation
_______________________________
the world has turned again
to Spring
and all the seekers of the sun
glide out in bright swirling crowds
winding joyously between the tents
conversations spilling and colliding
released from winter’s silent anomie
_____________________________________
it’s Market Day
but Jam Bill won’t be here this year
with jalapeno-lime and spicy peach concoctions
his clock run down in early fall
wares scattered ashes scattered
prayers lifted dirges sung
the Dance moves on the way it always does
laughter and cries of children
halting steps of old men
mothers shepherding their flocks
all surging among the stalls
burgeoning with a season’s hoarding
made and found objects
pieces of the darkness worked and polished
set to music
made for the delightful explosion from doors
and windows out into the world again
_______________________________________
it’s Market Day in Mower’s field
and madwomen artisans and poets
are offering the carefully crafted dreams
of long unbroken nights that seemed
to mock creation
crystallizing any hint of colour
capturing the rainbow in frozen shards
to pierce the heart and eye
with nightmare and aspiration
_______________________________
all barrenness forgotten now
in the swirling writhing Dance
coming together moving apart
ecstatic kaleidoscope
sparkling with ancient jewels and glowing metals
glass glinting rainbow sparks
in sunlight stabbing to the heart
in wild abandon
multicoloured breezes skirl like bagpipes
minor key highland melodies
haunt the market field
like the breath of all those lost to us
this cold time recent past
some spaces left
at least till most of us who knew them
are also spaces in the consciousness
of a future now unborn
________________________________________________
may there always be a Market Day
a community joined in creation and commerce
sharing all the little things unique
to our small lives with each other
may there always be a market field
bare in winter to collect the ghosts
and bury them in our storied earth
to green the trees
en-leaved and rustling
with
anticipation

Maple Lane, what a great place to raise a family
" Raising her family in her mother- in laws house must have been awkward for Anne at first. Eventually, Esther and Anne began to share the household chores. There was a big, deep white enamel sink in the kitchen, which made it easy to hook up the copper topped automatic wringer washing machine. They would drag the washing machine from the hallway where it was stored and push it into the kitchen. The only draw back, it had to be emptied by and with a pail. It seems as though every clear day was wash day on Maple Lane" American Tapestry, the Mowers of Maple Lane, Janine Fallon Mower 2007, p. 92).
Not just a fleamarket, but a home to many. Anne Mower with her children, John, Barbara, Patty, Kay, Linda and Maureen.
The changing landscape of Maple lane
If you plug in 7 Maple lane on google maps, you will be able to find our location. Over the past 36 years, vendors have changed and so has the landscape of Maple lane. Once a family home and farm lot, now a thriving seasonal business can be found at the same location
C 1979-celebrating our vendors
John loves to browse around the fleamarket. You just never know what you are going to find
Mower's fleamarket in Woodstock would not exist without our loyal vendors. We are truly grateful to our vendors who return each year.
1979
Bill Lubinsky, on the right, is credited with convincing John to begin running the fleamarket on Maple lane after Ralph Tripico decided to move to Virginia Beach. ( American Tapestry, the Mowers of Maple Lane 2007)
January 2013
Yes, it is chilly here in Woodstock. Maple lane is getting a much needed rest. We would like to see a little more snow on the field, and perhaps a giant snowman. We'll see after today what the ground hog predicts.
A family of helpers
Our mom's, Winnie and Annie, played a huge part in helping us run the fleamarket in the early years.
Jason and Colleen evolved from food vendors and makers of the best fresh lemonade at the fleamarket to
the new managers of Wednesday markets at Maple Lane. In July and August, we are open on Wednesdays in conjunction with the Woodstock Farm Festival. If it's Wednesday, your calendar should say WOODSTOCK!
Allan and Alexa
Allan and Alexa contribute to the management of Mower's fleamarket by adding in their talents of marketing and advertizing. We've got some great plans for 2013
Fleamarket managers in training
Don't let their age fool you. These guys watch everything John and Janine do at the fleamarket, and someday, they will take over and put their own unique stamp on Woodstock and the fleamarket. They are the 6th generation of Mower's to know and love Woodstock, NY
